Jensen's Inequality
Drag control points to reshape a convex or concave function, place probability mass, then compare ฯ(๐ผ[X]) to ๐ผ[ฯ(X)] directly.
Challenges
Convex ฯ โ drag the โ control points until the curve is convex (U-shaped). Jensen's inequality then guarantees ฯ(๐ผ[X]) โค ๐ผ[ฯ(X)] for any placement of X.
Concave ฯ โ make the curve concave (โฉ-shaped). Jensen's inequality reverses: ฯ(๐ผ[X]) โฅ ๐ผ[ฯ(X)].
Both directions โ find a curve that is neither convex nor concave. Then, with that same curve, find two different placements of X: one where ฯ(๐ผ[X]) โค ๐ผ[ฯ(X)] and one where the inequality flips. Click Show Jensen's for each placement.
